What's great about Arapahoe High School in Centennial, CO? Well...lots of things. Things like the administration, the teachers, the curriculum, the sports and last but not least the overall attitude and spirit. On Friday I experienced, not for the first time, another great thing about Arpapahoe. It's the Arapahoe Warriors Cross Country Invitational. Until recently, the event has been known as the Morris Vogel Cross Country Invitational. It is held each year at DeKoevend Park by Goodson Recreation Center in Centennial.
Always for me this event has been easily more exciting than the state cross country tournament. There were 44 high schools represented from across the state. What can be more exciting than all the students and parents cheering each other on? This is a tough sport, make no mistake about it. If you don't believe it, then you try running 3.1 miles in just 16 to 18 minutes in sweltering heat, going over two water crossings and making it up the slippery muddy hill when you come out of one of those water crossings. On the dirt trail of the Highline Canal you better hope to be in the front of the pack, otherwise you will be taking in a lot dust from the feet of hundreds of runners.
Arapahoe Girls Varsity came in in second place overall and Arpapahoe Boys Varsity came in third overall.
